Stress, Apprehension Not Managed, Could Leads To Mental Illness

An initiative of the World Federation of Mental Health and supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO), World Mental Health Day takes place every year on 10 October with the objective of raising awareness of mental health issues and promoting greater emotional wellbeing.

This year's world Mental Health Day was marked under the theme "Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World".

The South African Anxiety and Depression Group (Sadag) says companies should talk about mental health in order to create spaces for employees to speak openly about any illness. "Human rights violations and abuses persist in many countries, with large numbers of people locked away in mental institutions or prisons, or living on the streets, often without legal protection", it says. "Half of mental disorders begin before the age of 14 and indeed researchers have noted similar types of disorders are being reported across cultures and across languages", he said.

Issues such as homelessness, exposure to violence and perceived racism are some factors that can worsen the effects of mental health illness in African Americans.

Many places in the United Kingdom are starting to recognise the importance of this research and starting to change the game but we still have so far to go.
