The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines mental health as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.
Around one in five New Zealanders are impacted by some form of mental illness.
She cited WHO's definition of health, which states, that health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of a disease or infirmity. Minorities tend to have less access to and availability of mental health services, and according to the National Association of Mental Illness, African-Americans and Hispanic Americans used mental health services at about half the rate of whites in the past year.
"Most people with depression are not suicidal, but most suicidal people are depressed", says Dr Sebolelo Seape, chairperson of PsychMG. Living with a mental health problem can make it hard to relax and switch off. Lack of sleep is another common side-effect. One in four people in the United Kingdom suffer from this illness and I really hope this campaign will continue to extend the conversation about how important good mental health is, and how urgently we need the government to pour money into mental health resources - the county's crying out for it. At a time in their lives when young people are leaving home, developing friendships and applying for jobs, they need to know they can share their concerns and be open about their mental health without fear of discrimination.
