Nikki Haley resigned on Tuesday as the USA ambassador to the United Nations, in the latest departure from President Donald Trump's national security team. The former SC governor, 49, announced her decision on October 9 after meeting with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.

The president said she "has been very special to me, she has done an incredible job, she is a fantastic person, very importantly, but she is also somebody that gets it". Her resignation is amicable, and Trump apparently accepted it after discussions last week.

Mr Trump spoke as he and Ms Haley met in the Oval Office, shortly after word came of her plans to resign.

She called her service in the administration "the honor of a lifetime".

"I proudly serve in this administration, and I enthusiastically support most of its decisions and the direction it is taking the country". He said he'll announce a replacement for Haley within the next two to three weeks.

"We have a number of people who would like to do it", Trump said, adding that the position has become "more glamorous" in the time it was held by Haley.

Republican lawmakers swiftly praised Mrs Haley after the news broke.

Trump's administration has seen numerous departures since he entered the White House, but his national security and foreign policy circle has witnessed a particularly high level of turnover.

She fired back hours later telling Fox News: "With all due respect, I don't get confused". Trump added that Haley told him she wanted a break around six months ago.

Responding to questions from the media, Haley made it clear that she has no intention of running for president in 2020, but instead intends to campaign for Trump for a second term.

Haley resigned earlier in the day, the latest shake-up in the turbulent administration just weeks before the midterm elections. Haley enjoys strong support among Republicans and has always been rumored to harbor future presidential ambitions. But Haley constantly denied it, saying she hadn't given any thought to a presidential run.

Susan Page, D.C. Bureau Chief for USA Today, said on MSNBC shortly after the presser, "So maybe Jared Kushner or Ivanka is going to be the new United Nations ambassador, with that big endorsement". The latter two are CEOs of private companies in SC. Haley was confirmed with 96 of 100 votes.

Trump has a working list of contenders to succeed Haley, but has not shared it widely with even the most senior White House officials, one senior White House official told CNN.
