"I am saddened to inform you that Dylan Thomas, a Pike County High School Student, passed away last evening as a result of injuries sustained in the football game on Friday night", the message read. Thomas returned to the field but collapsed shortly afterwards on the sidelines when his leg and arm went numb.

"Christion is resting. He's fighting", Abercrombie's mother, Staci Abercrombie, said in a statement through the school's sports department on Sunday.

Thomas, a high school junior whose team was playing against Peach County during Friday night's matchup, was injured in the second quarter but did not feel the collision's effects until the second half. Many gathered on the school's football field for a memorial to the fallen teen.

The mayor of Williamson, Steve Fry, tells WAGA-TV Thomas underwent surgery to relieve brain swelling and went into a coma.

Thomas's uncle, Nick Burgess, has spoken to local media and posted about his nephew's death on Facebook. Dylan was an active participant in our school community and a member of the Class of 2020. Dylan was "the one that was the golden child in the family and really brought the family together. The one that had the biggest heart", Burgess wrote.

Dylan Thomas embodied what it means to be a football player, and his loss will never be forgotten by those who knew him best in Zebulon, Georgia.

A fundraiser to help Thomas's parents pay for medical bills and lost income had raised more than $33,000 as of Monday afternoon. "Please remember his family in the days ahead", the announcement said. A donation page has been set up on Facebook to assist the family.
