After ugly loss to Saints, Washington Redskins face crucial week ahead

Brees enters Monday night's game against the Washington Redskins just 201 yards shy of the record, now held by Peyton Manning.

Brees, 39, needed 201 yards to overtake Manning (71,940) and did so in the second quarter when he found Tre'Quan Smith for a 62-yard touchdown.

The 39-year-old passer, in his 18th National Football League campaign, needed 201 yards coming into the feature contest and reached 228 yards with a touchdown throw to Tre'Quan Smith down the right sideline as cheering supporters roared in the Superdome. After Brees completed a short pass to Ingram that eventually put the Saints on the 2-yard line, Ingram record the team's first touchdown a play later to give New Orleans an early lead. The record is now held by fellow great, Peyton Manning. "And so I'm still very focused on that", Brees said. They could have bounced back from the 38 yards lost on penalties, but allowed Ingram to establish a steady run game - and of course, Brees' record outing.

Brees is in his 18th season out of Purdue. Brees has passed for more than 59,000 yards and more than 400 TDs in 12-plus seasons for New Orleans, smashing every meaningful Saints passing record while helping long-frustrated franchise win its first Super Bowl in 2010 and go to the playoffs six times.

Head coach Sean Payton says he'll prepare his team like it's any other week. "It doesn't feel like it's been 13 years". Favre also stands between first and third, but considering Brees has thrown for less than 200 yards just twice since the start of 2014, you can do the math.

There's no good time for injuries, but this week is even worse with less time to recover due to playing on Monday night. In the press box, the Superdome catering staff served "beefy mac", a meal of macaroni with ground beef that has always been one of Brees' traditional meals on the night before games.
