Why is Pep Guardiola not in the dugout for City-Lyon fixture?

Arteta, linked with the vacant Arsenal manager's job following Arsene Wenger's departure, insisted City were ready for the game.

The reason? Guardiola is serving a touchline ban as a result of his sending-off in last season's quarter-final against Liverpool.

Arteta would not be drawn on whether Guardiola's absence from the touchline had any influence on an unusually disappointing performance by the champions of England.

"You wouldn't choose this situation but this is what is happening".

"Up to now the preparation has been completely normal, the difference tomorrow is obviously there are some rules that we will respect", Arteta said.

"We were very aware of Lyon's strengths and weaknesses. We weren't prepared to be 2-0 down at the break, but you have to react", he said.

Lyon were asserting themselves well in the early stages of the match, frustrating City from having any sort of rhythm. "If you don't win duels, play simple balls, you will suffer - today was another example of that". "We started quite slowly, we lost too many duels and twice in the first half we gave away the ball in unsafe areas and allowed Lyon to score both times".

The Ligue 1 side have scored just two goals in their last five Champions League matches, but they have conceded only three times.

"We didn't feel the flow around the team".

He stated that Real Madrid are still favourite to win this season's Champions League trophy despite losing their all-time highest goalscorer, Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus in the summer.

"[Guardiola] is very disappointed, we know how much the Champions League means for him". I can't fault the effort. "I can't really explain why we began so slowly, but sometimes in a new competition it takes a while to get on track", he said.
