Committee staff spoke to a second man over the phone Wednesday who also said he believed he, not Kavanaugh, had the disputed encounter with Ford.

Ford says in testimony for Thursday's Senate Judiciary Committee hearing that she was "terrified" to go public with her story.

"Dr. Blasey Ford answering these questions with her specific expertise is GREAT", wrote journalist Jessica Valenti on Twitter.

Grassley said that the committee had made multiple requests for additional evidence or information from attorneys for Deborah Ramirez, who claimed that Kavanaugh exposed himself to her during a party at Yale University, and Julie Swetnick, who claimed that she was gang-raped at a party attended by Kavanaugh and Judge. The US Senate Judiciary Committee is reviewing new allegations of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh's confirmation would cement conservative control of the high court as Trump moves to shift it and the broader federal judiciary to the right. Even before Prof. Blasey Ford's testimony, the Republican majority on the committee scheduled a vote on the nomination for Friday and are pushing for a vote of the full Senate on his nomination next week. Swetnick claims that the boys in the lineup included Kavanaugh and Judge, but does not say that they assaulted the girls, or the names of other witnesses who could corroborate it. Previously the pair had been friendly, she said, but that time Mr. Judge blanched at seeing her and appeared uncomfortable.

"I have never sexually assaulted anyone - not in high school, not in college, not ever", Kavanaugh says in prepared remarks released Wednesday. Both boys were inebriated, she said.

Both women's accusations have faced resistance from Senate Republicans.

Kavanaugh has categorically denied the allegation.

Swetnick, in an interview on MSNBC, said she had not planned to air her allegations one day before the hearing.

That means that a handful of moderate Republican senators who have not announced whether or not they support Mr Kavanaugh could determine his fate.

"So I want to apologise to you both for the way you've been treated".

During the free-wheeling news conference, Trump continued to lash out at Democrats and label the allegations against Kavanaugh politically motivated.

"It's happened to me many times", Trump said, claiming he'd been accused - falsely - by "four or five women".
