Three days after Swinney made freshman Trevor Lawrence his starter, Bryant told the Greenville News on Wednesday that he has chose to leave Clemson.

Swinney then listed players Nuk Hopkins, Sammy Watkins, Dexter Lawrence, Christian Wilkins, Deshaun Watson and Mitch Hyatt - newcomers who beat out veterans for the starting job. Bryant has reportedly missed the last couple of practices while he took in the news and decided upon his future.

"If I was anxious about that or was deceitful in some way, I could've huddled up our coaches and said let's make sure we start him against Syracuse, that way he's got no option, but that's not how I operate", Swinney said. "I've told y'all that many times that if we saw a change, if there was a change, we'd probably all know it, and that's what happened Saturday".

The senior quarterback started 18 games at Clemson, going 16-2 as a starter.

Bryant becomes the fourth quarterback to leave the Tigers since the enrollment of Lawrence, the country's top prospect at his position, last winter. I've never been in trouble with anything.

Under new NCAA redshirt guidelines and because he's leaving Clemson right now, Bryant can salvage his final year of eligibility. "To me, it was kind of a slap in the face". "There's tough decisions that have to be made at this level, and you've got to do what's best for the team".

"He is one of the best young people that I've ever been around".

Swinney spoke with Bryant about numerous topics, and while he ventured into very few intimate details with the media, he did acknowledge the scenario of Bryant never playing another snap for Clemson to retain a full season of eligibility to play elsewhere next season was broached. "I love him and care about him (and) wish him nothing but the best".

"When we first met on Monday we talked about the situation and I tried to encourage him to move forward and go back to work, but he was emotional", he said.

"I did tell him that if he wanted to go somewhere else and play next year, I would agree to not play him the rest of the year, continue to stay and be a part of it, if that's what he wanted to do and I would support in him in that", Swinney said.

Lawrence (above) - a 6-foot-6, 215-pound native of Cartersville, Georgia - has completed 39 of 60 passes for 600 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions through four games. "He has to move on, we gotta move on and get ready to play Syracuse".
