Pence outlined the administration's plans to establish the U.S. Department of the Space Force by 2020, and to create three new organizations within the Defense Department that would manage military operations in space.
Pence reiterated the president's burning desire for the armed-forces addition in his announcement, citing Trump's insistence that space is a battleground no different from air and sea.
Is it a Trump campaign tactic?
The tweet from Hamill, a frequent critic of Trump and the GOP, came just a day after the Defense Department released a report detailing how it will carry out Trump's request to establish a Space Force by 2020.
America's "Space Force" is about to become a real thing, despite the many doubters, and it is something one person in particular - the President - is really, really excited about. Space is vital to the way the United States wages war; the Pentagon's satellites are used for missile-defense warnings, guiding precision munitions, and providing communications and reconnaissance.
One of the arguments in favor of devoting more resources to a Space Force or Space Command is that American rivals like Russian Federation and China appear increasingly ready to strike United States space-based capabilities in the event of a conflict.
The Defense Department is already active in space, of course, with the Air Force in charge.
NY graphic design studio Other Means created a logo using the lettering from the Mel Brooks parody "Spaceballs", writing: "Is the Trump presidency being written by Mel Brooks?"
On Thursday's episode of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert joked about how bad an idea the Space Force was and said that 'longtime viewers of the Trump administration will remember that Space Force is the president's boldest idea.that he got from a Buzz Lightyear Happy Meal toy'. Democratic Senator Brain Schatz of Hawaii immediately expressed his dissent on Twitter.
Economic turmoil hits Turkey, US bank stocks react
The United States is the biggest destination for Turkish steel exports with 11% of the Turkish export volume. Erdogan appealed to Turks to exchange dollars and gold for Turkish lira to support the plunging currency.
No Republican is willing to tell Trump it's a "dumb idea", added the lawmaker from Hawaii.
"Space Force is not your solution", she said.
The Space Force would be the first new branch since 1947, when the Air Force was established as its own branch.
"Organizational changes don't fix all the problems".
In a nod to the Air Force's current role, the Pentagon report recommended that the Space Command be led initially by the commander of Air Force Space Command, who would be dual-hatted. Minutes later, however, when he declared American military personnel who focus on space operations and systems "the best", they reacted with loud applause. Criticism of a space branch levied by Defense Secretary James Mattis and others in the past have all been regarding the administrative and logistical expenses associated with the establishment of any new branch, not with its intended responsibilities. Created in 1982, it is headquartered at Peterson air force base in Colorado and oversees 30,000 people.
In a letter to a congressman, he said he did "not wish to add a separate service that would likely present a narrower and even parochial approach to space operations", adding it would create extra bureaucracy and cost.
Currently, there is a 30,000-person, three-star space command that's under the jurisdiction of the Air Force, said ABC News.
"It is becoming a contested war fighting domain and we have to adapt to that reality", Mattis said.
