Skywatchers thrilled by lunar eclipse

The total eclipse lasted 1 hour and 43 minutes, with the entire event lasting closer to four hours.

During totality, which begins at around 3:30 p.m. EDT (19:30 UTC), the moon will be immersed in Earth's shadow and will be "illuminated by red light filtered by the [Earth's] atmosphere", Diego said.

Mars was also at its closest point to Earth since 2003 last night and will be over the next few days. The eclipse will already have started by the time the Moon rises over the United Kingdom and Western Europe.

This Blood Moon eclipse can only occur during a full moon and takes place when the moon is perfectly aligned with the Earth and sun.

The view of the eclipsed moon and the sun is possible, weather allowing, because the rays of light from the sun and moon refract, or bend, around the earth's atmosphere. Parts of Europe, Eastern Africa, Australia, and South America will see different phases of the eclipse, but will miss out on parts of the penumbral, partial, or total phases. All this time the Moon was in the shadow of the Earth.

And unlike solar eclipses, especially the total solar eclipse in August 2017, the lunar eclipse was safe to view with the naked eye or binoculars.

Although the lunar eclipse is expected to last 103 minutes, observers in the United Kingdom and Ireland will not be able to catch the start as the moon will still be below the horizon. Astronomers call this interplanetary lineup, "syzygy", since planets appear brighter when they're directly behind Earth and directly in the path of the Sun's light.

It urged precautions and also reportedly said there was "no evidence that indicates a heightened level of threat to USA citizens". The video, released by RFE/RL's Tajik Service , shows a black sedan swerving to run down people spread across a rural road.

According to NASA scientists: "The exact colour that the moon appears depends on the amount of dust and clouds in the atmosphere".

The eclipse, however, will not be visible from North America or most of the Pacific.

You can still catch the eclipse live despite being on the other side of the world, though!

Where can you see the blood moon in July 2018?

"If you were standing on the moon in this eclipse, you would see the sun and then the earth would come in the way and blot out the sun", said Fabian.

You will find several videos and space channels live streaming the lunar eclipse.

The moon will fill the sky with a spectacular glow and take on a ruddy rust hue that's attractive, and vaguely creepy.
