Oscars to shorten run-time, add popular film category

The film Academy has announced a number of changes to the Oscars, including the introduction of a new category. "Eligibility requirements and other key details will be forthcoming", reads the statement.

The Academy last added a new category in 2001 for Best Animated Feature.

Industry observers have complained that sometimes, the Oscars come almost two months after the Golden Globes, making Tinseltown's awards season a marathon of gowns, glitz - and stress. Those (in the case of films like Black Panther, say) those nerdy, nerdy eyeballs, and the rooting interests they represent.

That last point would suggest that pressure for the changes has come as much from sections of the United States film industry as it has from the global television industry, for whom the Oscar telecast is an expensive, time-consuming exercise which, in recent years at least, has delivered diminishing commercial returns. The Oscars seemed closer than ever before to "recognizing quality cinema across the board", he said, especially considering the progress independent films have made in the best picture category over the past two decades. But Wednesday's announcement means there are more opportunities for those films to be recognized during Hollywood's Biggest Night.

All jokes aside, here's another thing that rubs this writer the wrong way about the new "Popular Film" category: it's inherently condescending toward whatever ends up winning that year.

Superhero films such as Black Panther are among those which could now stand a much better chance of being recognised during awards season.

For selfies, the device features a single 20MP Sony IMX376 sensor with f/2.2 aperture, 2.0μm pixels size, and soft LED flash. This is Xiaomi's second phone featuring Android One (Stock Android Experience), which is based on Android Oreo (8.1).

It's among three changes approved on Tuesday by the Academy's board of governors.

Also worth mentioning is the fact that, starting with the 91st Oscars next year, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences have chose to present select categories during commercial breaks, which helps bring that bum-numbing runtime down below three hours.

The Academy is making some changes to the Oscars.

The Academy Board of Governors has yet to reveal more information about what kind of achievement will be recognized and what qualifies as a popular film, and the Academy did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The date for the 2019 show, February 24, remains unchanged.

We are excited about these steps, and look forward to sharing more details with you.

Tapley said the addition of a popular film category was "the worst of these ham-fisted maneuvers because it's such a condescending stance toward popular cinema". Will this be a full-fledged Oscar, or will it be a lesser award signified by a plaque, certificate or some other marker of achievement? When The Academy Awards began, they were held in May. In order to accomplish this, not all of the categories will be presented live. Which is a huge bummer for those of us who used to tune in exclusively to see who'd win the award for Best Costume Design.
