Liverpool 4-0 West Ham: Naby Keita's flawless debut & magical Mo Salah

African stars Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were among the goals as Liverpool cruised to a 4-0 win over West Ham United in their Premier League opener at Anfield.

Liverpool got their league campaign underway with a comprehensive win over West Ham at Anfield.

Manager Jurgen Klopp, however, continues to perceive his side as an underdog in the battle to unseat Man City, likening their challenge to Rocky Balboa attempting to topple Ivan Drago.

Mane, who has now scored in each of his last three Premier League openers, and Salah, the league's Golden Boot victor last season with 32 goals, sealed Liverpool's victory in their first competitive game since they lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid in March.

A very good start, for sure.

Danish defender Jannik Vestergaard, signed by Southampton during the close-season, made a strong debut and the Saints defence looked well-drilled and solid. "Obviously he was not feeling really well so we sent him home again and I didn't see him so far and I didn't ask anybody, so we will see", Klopp said of the Brazilian.

He has returned to training this week but it's unclear as to whether he'll start the match or be among the substitutes. Hector Bellerin should complete the backline, with Stephan Lichtsteiner likely to be his backup this season.

"It is hard to win every game, if we see how Wolves, Fulham or Everton act, they are all ambitious".

Sturridge, who spent the second half of last season on loan at West Brom, is enjoying a renewed sense of goal on his return to Anfield.

Yet, despite the vast investment in the East Londoners, on this evidence Pellegrini will do well to better West Ham's 13th-placed finish last season as the visitors were happy to limit the damage after the break. Nobody knows exactly how well you did or how worthy your pre-season is. "We realised it was a very positive atmosphere around us in pre-season".

Both the wing forwards, Salah and Mane returned to Liverpool early for the pre-season fixtures after the World Cup campaigns with their national teams and both looked razor sharp and hungry to go again. I would expect us to perhaps sit deep (as most underdogs would) and narrow, limiting the space in behind and between the lines for Liverpool to create chances. "We can achieve good things together".

"Whether they have the capacity to catch a formidable City or not - and no matter how much opposition managers speak about Klopp having to start delivering a major trophy - it is better to be part of the conversation than on the outside listening in". Myself and many others believe that we perhaps missed a trick in failing to capture a class CDM and I hope that does not come back to haunt us. We knew it was going to be hard.

At the same time, I think many of us are wary of the time it may take for our players to gel and for Pellegrini's style of play to be instilled into our side. To win the FA Cup he'll need to figure out what has been preventing them getting to the latter stages. "Liverpool played well, but I don't think the difference was four goals".
