Forecasters also said Hector is expected to maintain major hurricane strength for the next two to three days, CBS Honolulu affiliate KGMB reports.

"Hector is our first hurricane this year", said Tom Travis, administrator of Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, in a press release on Friday.

Hawaii faces a new threat in the form of Hurricane Hector, a Category 3 storm that is churning its way towards the Big Island.

With maximum wind reaching speeds of 125 mph, the hurricane is still a long way from the islands, approximately 1,360 miles out as of Sunday.

Some fluctuations in intensity are expected overnight into Monday, followed by gradual weakening Monday night through Wednesday.

Hurricane Hector roared through the Central Pacific on Sunday and is expected to pass near the Big Island of Hawaii, where a volcano continues to send lava into the sea.

Hector had maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour (195 kph). It's not known yet if the island will be impacted.

CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said it was too early to tell if the hurricane would trigger an eruption of Kilauea.

"The track of the hurricane still has the center passing well south of the main Hawaiian island at this time", Brink said Sunday morning.

More than 700 homes and properties have been destroyed with thousands of people being forced to leave the area.

Officials urge that residents prepare an action plan if they need to shelter in place or evacuate their homes, and have an emergency kit with a minimum of 14 days of food, water and other supplies.
