The police asked people to lock their doors and avoid the area, confirming there had been 'multiple fatalities'.

Police in Fredericton, New Brunswick responded to the shooting in a residential neighborhood at around 7am on Friday, taking one suspect into custody after an intensive emergency response. "Please avoid the area", Fredericton Police said in a tweet.

It happened in the Brookside Drive area where there are a number of shops and houses.

Fredericton is located about 50 miles northeast of the USA border with Maine.

David MacCoubrey said he awoke in his apartment on Brookside Drive around 7:07 a.m. today to the sound of gunshots "10 metres from my bed". 'It was sort of like a pop, pop, pop, pop'.
