The implication seems to be that Apple's own app discovery algorithms are now sufficiently driving revenues, and it no longer needs sites to recommend and link to specific apps and games. The company opened an updated online iOS App Store in iOS 11 and plans to introduce a new Mac App Store for macOS Mojave.

Apple extended a corporate middle finger toward its army of fanbois as it announced the death of apps in the iTunes Affiliate Program yesterday.

Apps and in-app purchases for macOS and iOS will be completely removed from the Affiliate Program but all other content types including music, movies, books and TV shows will remain in the program. The company is maintaining its referral rate of 7% for music, movies, books and TV programs. Movies, TV, Mac apps, Mac in-apps, iBooks, and paid apps now earn a 7 percent commission rate while iOS in-app purchases and iTunes Music earn a 2.5 percent commission rate. But the company isn't obligated to support reviewers that aren't building other sources of revenue, such as advertising, paid subscriptions or even direct patronage. "Through thick and thin, and every curveball the industry threw at us, we always had App Store affiliate revenue - which makes a lot of sense as we drive a ton of purchases for Apple".

For Android devices - Download the app from the Google Play Store. All other content will remain part of the program. As Apple builds up its content business, it may eventually decide to add more in-house reviewers. "Apple Pay had well over 1 billion transactions last quarter, triple the amount from just a year ago", said CEO Tim Cook.
