Under heavy pressure from veterans' groups, President Trump made a rare about-face yesterday, ordering American flags at all USA government buildings lowered to half-staff to honor the late Sen.

The White House flag had been at half-staff since Saturday evening following McCain's death, but it was returned to full-staff early Monday morning until a reversal in the afternoon.

At the same time, the White House released a statement from the president in which Trump said that, despite differences on policy and politics, he respects McCain's service to the US and ordered flags be flown at half-staff until his internment.

Speaking from the Senate floor, McConnell says that while McCain served the state of Arizona in Congress, "he was America's hero all along". On Saturday, hours before McCain died, Ms. Ward speculated on Facebook that the McCain family announced the senator was ending medical treatment on Friday to distract from her final push in the primary.

McCain had a tumultuous relationship with President Donald Trump, whom Graham has defended in recent months.

"We weaken our greatness when we confuse our patriotism with tribal rivalries that have sown resentment and hatred and violence in all the corners of the globe", Mr. McCain said.

"We weaken it when we hide behind walls, rather than tear them down, when we doubt the power of our ideals, rather than trust them to be the great force for change they have always been", he added in an apparent reference to Mr Trump's plans for a border wall.

As McConnell spoke, McCain's desk sat draped in black crepe, topped with a vase of white roses. The Vietnamese people have that will and Mr. John McCain has that will. ...

"Out of respect for the life and legacy of Senator John McCain and his family, Governor Ducey will not be making any announcements about an appointment until after the Senator is laid to rest", Ducey's senior adviser, Daniel Ruiz II, told The Hill.
