Despite the latest setback, Morocco vowed to continue its bid to host the tournament in future.

The regional bid proved more appealing this time and the North Americans even collected 11 votes from Africa.

The 2026 World Cup will look a whole lot different from previous iterations of the tournament, thanks to the fact that it will be hosted by three countries - the United States, Mexico and Canada - and expanded to 48 teams for the first time.

A poll conducted by Ipsos MORI and published on June 7 showed that 73 percent of 12,000 people who took part in a global survey were happy with Russian Federation being the host of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Kuffour was part of the Ghana team that reached the second round on their World Cup debut in Germany in 2006, and says that team highlights a certain trend that has held back teams from the continent from realising their fullest potential.

To do so would have invited ridicule when it needed to build or renovate the 14 stadiums it wants to use - a task FIFA's technical report said "cannot be overstated". The US, however, hosted the country on its own merit in 1994, while Mexico have twice before organised the tournament, in 1970 and in 1986. "We are all united in football", US Football president Carlos Cordeiro said.

Of the 80 games, 60 will be played in the United States with 10 each in Canada and Mexico.

Italy threatens to CANCEL Macron meeting as tensions SOAR in immigration clash
French President Emmanuel Macron denounced the block on the Aquarius, insisting that Italy should have taken the migrants in. Meanwhile, an Italian coastguard ship carrying more than 900 migrants was allowed to dock in Sicily on Wednesday.

"We are set up to do exactly that - host groups and teams here - and would love to be involved if the opportunity arose", Robertson said.

The soccer showpiece will return to the US for the first time since 1994 after gaining 134 votes, while Morocco got 65 at the FIFA Congress in Moscow, where the 2018 tournaments starts on Thursday. There is now a professional league that includes impressive infrastructure such as stadiums and training grounds, European games are omnipresent on television, top players now come from across the country, and the World Cup is big business.

It's expected that Canada and Mexico will stage 10 games each with the US hosting 60.

Traditionally, the opening day has featured one game involving the tournament host.

The North American bid book published earlier this year proposed the 84,953-capacity MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just outside New York City for the final.

After considering separate bids for the 2026 World Cup, the federations that govern soccer in Mexico, Canada and the United States chose to launch a cooperative effort to host the tournament in April 2017.
