The race is perhaps the most closely watched matchup in Tuesday's slate of primaries, which also include Virginia selecting a Republican to take on Democratic Sen.

Rep. Mark Sanford, one of President Donald Trump's sharpest Republican critics, was ousted by a primary challenger on Tuesday after Trump waged an extraordinary last-minute effort to defeat him.

The results come after Arrington repeatedly attacked Sanford for opposing Trump. The refers to 2009, when Sanford's aides said he was hiking the Appalachian Trail while he actually visited a woman with whom he was having an affair in Argentina.

Sanford, who's won every election race he's run since first seeking a House seat in 1994, is a reliably conservative Republican and usually votes for Trump's legislative agenda.

On Tuesday, five states - Nevada, Maine, North Dakota, South Carolina and Virginia - will vote to determine party nominees ahead of November's midterm elections.

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) criticized his fellow Republicans, saying the GOP has become "cult-like" in its support of President Donald Trump.

"I fully endorse Katie Arrington for Congress in SC, a state I love", Trump continued. She is tough on crime and will continue our fight to lower taxes. Our president is going to be the president until 2020 at a minimum, or 2024, and Mark has ostracized him to the point where there will never be a seat at the table for him, ' she said at a campaign event.

Sanford was not the only sitting member to receive the Trump Twitter treatment as the head of the Republican Party - clearly on a high from his historic meeting with the North Korean leader - returned to the White House. Trump endorsed Arrington, a first term state legislator.

Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob also show up in the clip, directed by Karena Evans. If you're familiar with Smith's View Askew universe , you can probably guess how.

Another Republican who was also critical of Trump, Alabama GOP Rep. Martha Roby, is also at risk of losing re-election.

Fourth, if many of those endangered Republicans lose, the Trump party left behind will be more radical, nativist, protectionist and irrational (because they blindly follow an irrational president).

Arrington, a businesswoman with ties to the military, was considered an underdog when she initially launched her first race for Congress past year. "He is better off in Argentina", the president wrote. In a highly unusual move for a president, he had tweeted an endorsement of Arrington on Tuesday afternoon when polls were still open in SC.

In Comstock's district, Wexton was the best-known in the field, and was viewed as the Democratic Party's establishment choice.

To be sure, the president's track record of picking winners and losers in elections is not ideal.

Democratic members on Tuesday said Trump handed Kim a public relations win and gave up major concessions like ending annual military exercises with South Korea. State Attorney General Janet Mills is expected to win the Democratic nomination, while business executive Shawn Moody is the frontrunner in a close, four-person race for the Republican nomination.

"I think we all have a question of whether we have a Republican or Democratic primary based on the institutions of the American system", he said. After all, candidates backed by Trump (i.e., Luther Strange, Roy Moore, Rick Saccone, Ed Gillespie) also lost.

The outcome - one that national Republicans working on House races said as recently as Tuesday morning they did not anticipate - is another sign that GOP primary voters are rejecting lawmakers who break with Trump.
