Salmonella from eggs has sickened almost three dozen people, 11 of them requiring hospitalization, as an outbreak continues to spread since a multi-state recall of more than 200 million eggs in April.

Rose Acre Farms has 17 facilities in eight states, The Washington Post reported.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has linked the outbreak to eggs from Rose Acre Farms and its production facility in Hyde County, North Carolina, which led to a voluntary recall of 206 million eggs.

At least 11 people have been hospitalized due to complications, but no deaths have been reported, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Friday.

Almost 50 people have been sickened by the contaminated eggs.

The grocery stores are located in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Virginia, Colorado, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida.

Affected packages are stamped with the plant number P-1065 and Lot Codes 011 - 102. The FDA says that they were sold under Walmart, Publix, and Food Lion's store brands, plus a variety of brand names (Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Glenview, Nelms, Sunshine Farms, Sunups), and also turned up in a few restaurant chains like Waffle House. For Publix and Sunups egg cartons, the plant number is P-1359D and the Julian date is 048A or 049A with best by dates of April 02 and April 03. The last one was in 1990, 28 years ago, that sickened 450 people - and that's two more salmonella outbreaks than your average egg producer has had.

Consumers who have any of these shell eggs in their homes should not eat them and should throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for credit or refund.

In an emailed statement, Seymour-based Rose Acre Farms said the inspection report "is based on raw observations and in some cases lack proper context".
