Authorities say a school bus and dump truck have collided on a New Jersey highway and multiple people are injured.

The school bus had markings for the Paramus School District. The principal's office hung up the phone when News 4 called seeking comment.

Numerous people could be seen gathered at the median, along with many emergency responders.

No additional details on the children or the nature of the injuries were available.

Multiple people were being transported to the Hackettstown Medical Center.

The extent of the injuries was not immediately known. There was also damage to the back of the bus.

The body of the bus came completely off its chassis.

Manuel Absalon, a tourist from Mexico who was traveling on a New York City-bound bus from Toronto on Route 80, says he didn't see the actual collision but was struck by the aftermath. "The front of the bus is barely recognizable", News 4 reports. "It looked like it was broken in half". A dump truck and the school bus crashed in the town of Mount Olive, according to Mayor Robert Greenbaum. A school district official said its superintendent was preparing a statement.

Traffic was initially shut down on I-80 in both directions near the site of the accident.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was gathering information on the crash.
