Nevada and five other states are filing new lawsuits alleging that a pharmaceutical company used deceptive marketing to boost drugs sales that fueled opioid overdose deaths.
Six more US states on Tuesday announced lawsuits against OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma LP, accusing the company of fueling a national opioid epidemic by deceptively marketing its prescription painkillers to generate billions of dollars in sales. In the course of the investigation, Stenehjem said he concluded that Purdue Pharma is in large part responsible for fueling the opioid epidemic. Attorney General Paxton's lawsuit seeks significant penalties from the company for its illegal conduct, and a permanent injunction to prevent future harm to Texans. The state's lawsuit was filed in Knox County Circuit Court.
Starting a year ago, Attorney General Paxton and a bipartisan group of 40 other state attorneys general have been conducting an investigation into whether companies that manufacture and distribute prescription opioids engaged in unlawful practices.
Stenehjem says Purdue "misrepresented and trivialized" the risk of addiction from prolonged opioid use.

"Today's opioid crisis is inextricably linked to Purdue's pervasive and deceptive marketing campaign". Each day, 115 Americans die of opioid overdoses.
In a statement sent to us, Purdue Pharma officials said they deny these allegations and look forward to presenting their defense. He says proceeds from the lawsuit should be devoted to opioid treatment programs. If necessary, and depending on how the settlement discussions progress, North Dakota will amend its complaint to include additional manufacturers or bring separate suits against other manufacturers or distributors, according to Stenehjem.
Laxalt spokeswoman Monica Moazez says similar lawsuits were expected in Florida, North Carolina, North Dakota, Tennessee and Texas.
