Sadly Stoke's away record is the worst in the division - there has been just one win, back in October, and a total haul of a meagre eight points.

So the title is decided, the top four have a healthy cushion over Chelsea in fifth, and Antonio Conte's side are themselves six points ahead of Arsenal in sixth.

Carroll's third goal of the season - in his first appearance since January - was a priceless contribution for West Ham, who are now seven points above the bottom three.

"We've still got four games left, we've got to win them, no-one's safe, and we've got to keep working".

The Hammers also had two goals correctly chalked off for offside while the only time Stoke really threatened before they scored came when Moritz Bauer broke down the right but Mame Diouf blazed hopelessly over the bar.

Carroll, out injured since the turn of the year, was sent on as a last throw of the dice by manager David Moyes with West Ham trailing to Peter Crouch's goal.

"We got him back at the start of the week so we will keep monitoring him".

Hammers missed a number of decent opportunities, but are now unbeaten in three Premier League matches.

Carroll last played for West Ham more than three months ago, with an ankle injury depriving the team of its target man up front.

"I think the important thing was to make sure we didn't lose tonight and I thought the commitment from the players, energy, to make sure that didn't happen showed late on but their play throughout with the ball was one of the better performances I have seen since I have been here".
