Noting that Assad should know that the use of chemical weapons will be met with a strong response, House Democratic Whip Steny H Hoyer said the USA acted with its allies to respond to the use of chemical weapons in violation of worldwide law.

The official added that "while the available information is much greater on the chlorine use, we do have significant information that also points to sarin use" in the attack.

Syrian president Bashar al-Assad told a group of Russian lawmakers on Sunday that Western missile strikes on his country were an act of aggression.
