Trump Says Comey "Committed Many Crimes" as His Twitter Eruption Continues

Ahead of the launch of his autobiography A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership, Comey appeared on ABC's 20/20, in his first televised interview since being fired as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

President Trump on Monday called ousted former FBI Director James Comey and fired Deputy Director Andrew McCabe "disgruntled" and suggested they "committed many crimes!"

The book's imminent release - and the slated ABC News interview - prompted Trump to hurl a new set of insults at Comey earlier on Sunday, challenging accusations made in the book, and insisting that he never pressed Comey to be loyal to him.

Asked whether he believed Trump ought to be impeached, Comey replied, "I hope not because I think impeaching and removing Donald Trump from office would let the American people of the hook and have something happen indirectly that I believe they're duty bound to do directly".

Trump has already taken to twitter to respond to Comey's book calling him a "proven LEAKER & LIAR". Many believe his reopening of the FBI's inquiry into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server as Secretary of State barely a week before the election, while making no mention of the active inquiry into Mr Trump and Russian Federation, swung the election to Mr Trump. "This president is not able to do that", he said.

"I think, given his experience with me, that he has an opportunity in overseeing Bob Mueller to restore some of his professional reputation".

"It is wrong to stand idly by, or worse, to stay silent when you know better, while a president brazenly seeks to undermine public confidence in law enforcement institutions that were established to keep our leaders in check", Comey wrote.

"It must have been", Comey acknowledged, "I don't remember consciously thinking about that, but it must have been".

In regards to Trump asking Comey to drop his investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, there was "certainly some evidence of obstruction of justice". Clinton herself has pointed to Comey's actions in explaining her presidential election loss.

Mr Comey also said he believed that Mr Trump was "morally unfit" to be president and that he treated women like "pieces of meat".

Comey's morality-based contempt for Trump appears so strong that he wondered aloud, in the interview: "Where are we as a country?"

Trump has said he fired Comey because of his handling of the FBI's investigation into Clinton's email practices.

He also spoke about special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating the alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election. Comey: "It is stunning and I wish I wasn't saying it, but it's just - it's the truth".

But Trump dedicated most of his morning to Comey, whom he called a "Slimeball!" in his first tweet, which is not his first use of that epithet in regards to Comey.

He also appeared to cite Comey's testimony before Congress a year ago, in which he told Senator Chuck Grassley, a Republican of Iowa, that he had never been an anonymous source to the press nor had he authorized someone else to do the same.

"Comey's PR tour reaffirms that his true higher loyalty is to himself, " she wrote.

"I often hear people talk about it". 'Cause he said, you know, 'If there's even a 1 percent chance my wife thinks that's true, that's bad'.
