Tamil Nadu government promises stringent action in assistant professor's case

Nirmala Devi who was a maths teacher at the prestigious college in Virudhnagar locked herself up in her house after she found a tip of police personnel posted outside her house at Chokkalinga Nagar at noon.

The State government on Monday promised stringent action against an assistant professor of mathematics in a college in Virudhunagar district, who had allegedly lured girl students with "money" and "marks" in order to sexually exploit them.

Chennai: An assistant professor of Devanga Arts College, a private institution in Aruppukottai, was on Monday arrested on charges of attempting to traffic four of her girl students claiming that some high official of the Madurai Kamaraj University wanted their services.

The advice is being seen as a suggestion for sexual favours.

According to her this opportunity would come with a lot of money which would be transferred directly into bank accounts opened in the students' names. "They have been troubling me for a long time", she says. When they were not game for it, she asked them not to reveal about the conversation to anybody.

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha Member and former Union Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss of PMK, termed the incident as "shocking" and demanded a CBI probe into the incident, besides the immediate arrest of Nirmala Devi. The MKU staff reportedly protested in Madurai on Tuesday opposing the committee formed by the governor.
