Haley declined to say how the USA would respond if Syria uses conventional weapons.

"We did not do any coordination with Russian Federation on these strikes, and neither did we pre-notify them", Marine General Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Friday night.

Earlier in the day, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said that Washington was preparing new sanctions against Moscow that "will go directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to Assad and chemical weapons use".

Marios Hadjikyriacos, investment analyst at XM, said risk sentiment was "not out of the woods just yet", saying: "Russia has yet to respond to the Syrian strike, while the US Treasury is reportedly preparing to unveil new sanctions against Moscow today". But the rollout of new sanctions is usually closely guarded, in part to prevent people subjected to them from quickly moving their money around.

"Fears of a direct military conflict between the USA and Russian Federation have been sidelined, allowing markets to breathe easier, but only somewhat", BCS analysts said in a note. Each Britain and France engaged in the strikes, which struck at Advancement Heart and the Barzah Investigation outside Damascus and two weapons storage centers.

President Donald Trump on Sunday defended his use of the phrase "Mission Accomplished" to describe a US -led missile attack on Syria's chemical weapons program, even as his aides stressed continuing USA troop involvement and plans for new economic sanctions against Russian Federation for enabling the government of Bashar Assad.

"With the political and diplomatic actions that we're taking now, we wanted [Syria's] friends, Iran and Russian Federation, to know that we meant business and that they were going to be feeling the pain from this as well", Haley said.

The inspectors were due to attempt to visit the site of the suspected gas attack in Douma on April 7, which medical relief organisations say killed dozens of people.

And she said President Donald Trump told her Saturday morning that if the Syrian regime uses poisonous gas again "the United States is locked and loaded" to strike again.

Post-strike statements from Western capitals suggest they want to lower the tension.

"However that I presume we think it is astonishing, as do most folks, a nation which helped assemble the chemical weapons convention along with the worldwide non-proliferation regime, " which Russian Federation can now be clearly one of these rogue states which are looking to undo it", the ambassador explained.

"Russian sanctions will be coming down", Haley said during a CBS interview on Sunday.

Reports earlier this week claimed that the U.S. military would notify its Russian counterparts of potential targets before a strike.

The night time assault on Syria was carefully limited to minimise civilian casualties and avoid direct conflict with Russian Federation, but confusion arose over the extent to which Washington warned Moscow in advance.
