National Weather Service confirms tornado in Baxter County in Friday's storms

The National Weather Service sees a 30 percent chance of showers overnight, improving to 70 percent Monday.

The Weather Service forecasts a slight chance of more rain Wednesday night, then highs of about 80 by the weekend.

First responders were working to assist those in Craig County, Lynchburg and other localities impacted by possible tornado damage, according to Jeff Stern of the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

A Tornado in Lafayette County Mississippi reached 75 miles per hour traveled a half mile.

By the evening, skies should be mostly clear. The damage is widespread, many homes were destroyed, and 12 people were injured. "There's a telephone pole that's snapped like a toothpick", Fuqua said. The tornado dissipated roughly 1/4 mile east of CR 215.

By the end ot the severe weather event, more that three dozen reports were submitted that spanned from tornadoes, wind damage, flooding, to hail.

The last tornado to strike Amherst was on July 9, 1990. No serious injuries were reported in those storms. Campbell most recently saw a tornado on February 24, 2016, but no tornadoes have tracked through Lynchburg, according to records going back to 1950.

The National Weather Service issued an advisory for both states late Sunday, in effect until 3 a.m. Monday.

Meteorologists there say big April storms like this one are not unheard of but they are pretty rare. A couple of trees fell on homes, and two families are displaced, Loftin said.

"It was very unnerving to be in a vehicle out in the storm", Turner said.

Statewide, 10 tornado warnings and 34 severe thunderstorm warnings were issued by the National Weather Service as the line of storms crossed from the mountains to the Chesapeake Bay.

But the confirmation of whether it was an actual tornado will come Monday when teams are able to look at the damage on the ground.

One of the EF2 tornadoes was in Crawford County, near Mountainburg, where Gov. Asa Hutchinson toured Sunday to survey the damage.

Tornadoes damaged several homes in neighboring Union County, which had two tornadoes, County Judge Mike Loftin said.

Rainfall was heaviest northwest of Richmond, which is causing the James River to rise.

The storms brought 1.53 inches of rain to Richmond International Airport, and totals varied from roughly 0.75 inch to almost 2 inches across the metro area.
