Rapper Meek Mill's medication and gun convictions need to be dumped and also he should be granted a fresh trial, " prosecutors claimed in court Monday in an announcement that directed his supporters out to divide an impromptu dance party. Mill, 30, has been in prison since November for a parole violation, on charges that stem from 2008.

But many who advocate for Mill's release say they're protesting for something bigger than just his case-for the reform of a justice system that allows young Black men to become incarcerated for long periods of time-keeping them separated from their families-for non-violent charges, such as possession of marijuana.

Judge Genece Brinkley refused to free him on bail after the announcement from the Philadelphia district attorney's office during a hearing. Another hearing was advised by her June.

Spokesman Ben Waxman said the prosecutor's office agreed to support a new trial "due to questions of credibility of the arresting officer".

After court, Brian McMonagle, a lawyer for Meek Mill, told the Inquirer that he would be filing motions with higher courts to secure Meek Mill's release. "Our office also holds the position that we do not oppose Mr. Mill being released on bail while his appeals are being considered".
