Illegal telephone exchange scam: Maran brothers acquitted

Special judge Natarajan said he was discharging the seven as prima facie, there was no evidence to prove the charges against them.

The CBI alleged that Dayanidhi Maran used 764 telephone links and for which no bills were raised causing a loss of Rs 1.78 crore to BSNL, Chennai and MTNL, Delhi when he was telecom minister.

A CBI special court has discharged Kalanithi and Dayanidhi Maran in the illegal telephone exchange case.

Former BSNL General Manager K Brahmanathan, former Deputy General manager M P Velusamy, Dayanidhi Maran's Private Secretary Gauthaman were also let go free. It held that between June 2004 and December 2006, Dayanidhi Maran, when he was Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology, had misused his power and allegedly installed a private telephone exchange at his residence in Chennai for business transactions involving Sun Network, which was owned by his brother Kalanidhi Maran.

"The case is not even tried".

The shares were trading at ₹942.20 a piece just before the close of trading on Wednesday.

During the hearing of the discharge petitions, the Maran brothers and others argued that they were innocent and did not commit any irregularities as alleged by the prosecution.

This is the second major legal victory for a DMK leader.

In November, the CBI strongly opposed the discharge petitions filed by the Maran brothers in the case.

Couple of months ago, the party's Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi and former Telecom Minister A Raja were acquitted by a court in the 2G spectrum case.
