HTC Vive Pro to arrive in April at $799

HTC Vive Pro pre-orders are now being accepted, coinciding with a price drop for the original Vive headset.

The availability of the Vive Pro will coincidence with the release of the so-called first VR-themed movie, Ready Player One, directed by Steven Spielberg at the end of March, which will help promote the sale of the Vive Pro, contended the sources. The company also reduced the price of the existing Vive full kit by United States dollars 100 to USD 499 across the globe.

"There's a clear need in the VR market for a premium VR experience with high resolution display, integrated audio and the best components available today in a headset", Daniel O'Brien, GM U.S., Vive said during launch at CES 2018.

HTC explains the Vive Pro works "with both SteamVR Tracking 1.0 and 2.0, meaning existing Vive customers can upgrade the headset only and continue to use current generation controllers and base stations".

All those consumers who purchase a Vive Pro HMD by 3 June would receive a free six-month trial to the Viveport subscription that would give them the option to choose up to five titles each month from the more than 400 titles available. So, what are some of the Vive Pro improvements?

"The Vive Pro comes with dual-OLED displays", HTC announced in its statement (via ), "making for a crisper image resolution of 2880 x 1600 combined, a 78% increase in resolution over the current Vive HMD".

The free six-month subscription to Viveport offered to early adopters of the Vive Pro may prove attractive, since HTC has also announced that the monthly price of a Viveport subscription will rise from £6.99 to £8.99 on March 22. Existing subscribers and those who sign up before the increase takes effect will be locked in at the United States dollars 6.99 price point through at least the end of the 2018.
