Volvo XC40 Gets The Brand's First-Ever Three Cylinder Engine

As well as the first three-cylinder engine in a Volvo, the new XC40 can now be had with the 148bhp D3 diesel and the 187bhp T4 petrol, as well as the D4 and T5. But given the fact that Volvo's United States media site doesn't list the three-cylinder info, it's probably a safe bet that this engine will only be offered in Europe and other markets - at least initially. Furthermore, this 1.5-liter inline-three engine has been specifically created to integrate with Volvo's Twin Engine technology, meaning a plug-in hybrid XC40 is on the way.

It was also designed from the ground up to be compatible with Volvo's "Twin Engine" hybrid system, meaning that more affordable plug-in hybrids are on the horizon. The three-cylinder powertrain (badged T3) comes with a six-speed manual transmission, with an eight-speed automatic option to follow next year. In line with Volvo Cars' strategy to continue improving economies of scale, the engine will roll off the same production lines as the company's four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The luxury vehicle maker plans to introduce a new 8-speed automatic gearbox to the engine next year.

One thing we know for sure is coming for USA customers is Inscription trim, the highest level offered. The company is also adding a raft of new options - 18-, 19-, or 20-inch wheels, bespoke skidplates, side window and grill mesh chrome, and model-specific hues. Inside, the XC40 Inscription gets driftwood inlays and a crystal gear lever.

Lindsey Vonn wins bronze in women's downhill with one event to go
Vonn still has an outside chance of capping her final Games with Olympic gold when she competes in the combined on Thursday. The three training runs here at the Jeongseon downhill course suggest that Vonn is in excellent position for a medal.

Initially, this new three-cylinder petrol motor will be paired with a 6-speed transmission in the Volvo XC40 that is expected to be launched in India in middle of this year.

The XC40 starts at ~$36,000 and it will be interesting to see how they will price the electric version.
