VENEZUELA: Lima Group Rejects Call For Elections In The Country

The United States has said it will reject the Venezuelan election, the timing of which also drew condemnation from several of Venezuela's neighbors as well as nations in Europe.

They urged the government to present a new electoral calendar.

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has ordered the reopening of the country's consulate in Miami, home to a sizeable anti-government community, before presidential elections on April 22, reversing a move by his predecessor Hugo Chavez.

Venezuela's foreign minister had recently tweeted that Maduro planned to attend. Peru's decision was made with the support of the Lima Group, which upheld the high democratic standard for Summit participation.

According to the Lima Group, the call "makes it impossible to hold democratic, transparent and credible presidential elections, with the participation of all Venezuelan political actors, with observation and global standards".

"Cuba energetically condemns the pronouncement of a group of countries of the Western Hemisphere of February 13 in Lima, that constitutes an unacceptable interference in the internal affairs of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela", highlights a declaration of the Cuban Foreign Ministry.
