President Moon reportedly objected to a call on Saturday from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to quickly resume South Korea's joint military drills with the United States after the Olympics, saying it was a violation of his country's sovereignty, according to a Blue House official.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un has extended a rare invitation to South Korea's President Moon Jae-in to visit Pyongyang.

"Ultimately, North Korea's objective is to normalize its status as a nuclear power so that it can push for sanctions relief without giving up its weapons", said Troy Stangarone, a senior director at the Korea Economic Institute in Washington.

When he was returned to the U.S., he had horrific brain injuries which his family attributed to him being tortured by the Kim Jong Un's regime.

Saturday's meeting, the most significant diplomatic encounter between the two sides in more than a decade, could now be surpassed should Moon accept Kim's invitation to visit Pyongyang later this year.

At a Games rife with political overtones, US Vice-President Mike Pence was at the nearby Gangneung Ice Arena as the first North Korean athlete flopped.

Pence did not meet with the North Korean delegation while in South Korea, and did not exchange greetings with Kim Yo Jong during the Olympic Games opening ceremony, despite being seated only a short distance apart.

Babilina Hwang, a visiting professor at Georgetown, told CNN that "Kim Yo Jong is the ideal counterpart to (Ivanka Trump). I hope the worldwide community will also provide support".
