Other programs remain nearly fully funded, including those devoted to cleaning up Superfund sites and surface water protection.

(February 12, 2018)-The Trump Administration today released its proposed budget, which drastically cuts core Great Lakes programs as well as funding for the federal agencies, such as the Environmental Protection Agency, charged with implementing them. And if freshwater resources are allowed to degrade, the impacts are enormous.

Launched in 2010, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is an effort to restore and preserve the lakes through cleaning, invasive species control, harmful algal bloom management and more.
But Congress decided otherwise, illustrating the popularity of the cleanups among lawmakers of both parties and voters who want progress on long standing problems.
