"It looks like we are on track to break some recent records", said Dr. Anne Schuchat, acting director of the CDC. The CDC said that one out of every 10 deaths in the last week were from the flu, almost 8 percent of all hospital visits were flu-related, and 48 states are experiencing widespread influenza activity.
And now, Hawaii officials are trying to stop that wave while focusing on older adults - 65 and up - since they make up 85 percent of all flu-related deaths in the US, according the Centers for Disease Control.
"We have a lot to learn still about influenza", she said.
Torrey added,"people die every year, but when you hear about the number of cases we are having, when you hear about the hospitals are full to the brim right now with the complications coming from, it is very concerned because it's so readily becomes contagious".
The dominant strain for the season is the Influenza A H3N2 strain, which jumpstarted the season in the final weeks of 2017 - and continues to drive most of the cases seen by doctors.
This year's flu season has now reached a level that we haven't seen since the 2009 swine flu pandemic, and we haven't yet reached the peak. More than 60 children suffered flu-related deaths this season, federal health officials said.
There were seven flu outbreaks in long-term care facilities across the state, including one in Eastern Iowa this past week.
