Saakashvili was arrested in a Georgian restaurant in Kiev on February 12, taken to the city's main worldwide airport and immediately shipped to Poland, the country from which he had illegally returned to Ukraine in September 2017 by breaking through a border checkpoint with the help of his supporters, after being stripped of his Ukrainian citizenship by Poroshenko in July.

The former Ukrainian opposition leader is married to a Dutch woman, Sandra Roelofs.

On Wednesday, he spoke briefly to AFP outside the offices of the immigration authorities in Rotterdam, where his lawyer said he was sorting out his residency permit.

At a press conference in Warsaw on Tuesday, Saakashvili said he had been blindfolded and rushed first by van, then by helicopter to Kiev worldwide airport. On July 26, 2017, Poroshenko stripped him of his Ukrainian citizenship, while Saakashvili had stepped down as governor several days before that.

Saakashvili is now stateless, having lost his Georgian citizenship in 2015 when he accepted Ukrainian citizenship to become governor of Odessa.

In the last round, with the last run of the final, White managed to pull out a near-perfect run to steal gold. So there were a lot of obstacles to overcome and now it's all worth it.

Kiev accuses Saakashvili, 50, of trying to stage a coup sponsored by allies of former Kremlin-backed Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych - a charge he strongly denies.

"I will return to Ukraine, because I have a legitimate right to live there".

In September, Saakashvili defied the Ukrainian authorities and forced his way back into the conflict-riven country across the border from Poland with the help of supporters.

His Georgian citizenship had already been revoked after getting a Ukrainian passport in 2015. The fact that he was sent to Poland was explained by the fact that it was readmission, but not deportation, as he as a persona non grata was returned to the country from which he arrived illegally.
