South Africa's pacemen adopted a successful strategy of aggressive short bowling and, although Dhoni managed a run-a-ball 42 not out, India were never able to get on top of the bowling. He knows how hard it has been for the Indian side. The positives from the loss were that India looked to be in control for 90 per cent of the game and would think that they lost because of the inexperience of youngsters - Chahal, Kuldeep and Iyer.

Previously, Sourav Ganguly was the last Indian to miss out on the milestone, after getting dismissed on 97 in a 1999 World Cup match against South Africa in Hove. Shastri was not there to explain the significance of the situation but his trusted lieutenant was there to elaborate on what the game means to the side.

When South Africa won in India in 2015, Harbhajan Singh, Axar Patel and Amit Mishrah, who did the majority of the spin bowling for the hosts, claimed just 15 wickets between them over the five-match series. We are really proud of ourselves as a team.

"To have the win under our belts has lifted the spirit and the belief in the change room and it is also nice to have a guy like AB (De Villiers) back with us because the environment changes".

So can India capture the moment that they have presented themselves with?

The Proteas, wearing pink outfits in support of breast cancer awareness, seemed hapless as India's left-hand-right-hand combination found the boundaries easily. Rohit's inability to even hang around has seen him play just 66 deliveries in these four innings - a far cry from how he usually operates in India where he can often start off slowly, knowing that he can catch up with the strike-rate once he gets going. Both Kuldeep Yadav and Chahal went for runs. The oriental mystery has been at its magical best. That day Rohit Sharma had struggled against the likes of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, scoring just 18 off 43 balls. South Africa's stand-in captain was at cover when a full-blooded slash came his way.

India's indomitable cricket team looks set for a landmark series triumph but an injury-ravaged South Africa would hope for some A B de Villiers magic to halt the visitors' charge in the fourth one-dayer, here on Saturday. AB de Villiers (26) hit Yuzvendra Chahal (1-68) for back to back sixes but fell to Hardik Pandya (1-37) in the following over. Besides, they come to a venue and occasion from where they only have positive memories.

This however is not the first instance where the South African team wore pink.

A day before the Pink ODI, Ajay was spotted bowling to a lot of Proteas batsmen for a long time. It is fair to say that the Proteas were unlucky in the field as edges didn't go to hand and a ball trickled next to the stumps but credit should be given to the excellent batting of Dhawan and Kohli. "Anyone can have a sh*t day, you know?" He admitted Kohli has been the bugbear for them but he was lucky. He has an exceptional record while batting in pink and scored the fastest hundred in ODI history at the Wanderers against West Indies three years ago.
