The opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics was briefly interrupted Friday, after security had to remove US President Donald J. Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un from the stadium. "If you want to get a hold of Kim Jong-un and you're a North Korean, maybe you should befriend Kim Yo Jong", Madden said.

It is the first time in over a decade for a South Korean president to hold formal talks with high-ranking North Korean officials. But it would be Kim's first meeting with a foreign head of state.

"We will not allow North Korean propaganda to hijack the message and imagery of the Olympic Games", he said in Japan earlier this week.

"There is no daylight between the United States, the Republic of Korea and Japan on the need to continue to isolate North Korea economically and diplomatically until they abandon their nuclear and ballistic missile program", Pence said as he flew back to the United States.

"Even though we have completely different ideologies, through this event we can come together and root for each other", Cho said. In a news conference last month, he said he was not interested in "talks for talks' sake".

Cho's mother was captured by North Korean troops during Korean War.

The Games has seen better ties between the two Koreas despite tensions over the North's nuclear programme.

Moon's government is clearly more optimistic than the Trump administration about the potential for the Koreas' cooperation at the Olympics to create the groundwork for more substantial discussions.

She was the first member of North Korea's ruling family to visit the South, while Kim Yong-nam was the most senior North Korean official to make a cross-border trip.

North and South Koreans marching together under a unified peninsula flag gave Thomas Bach goosebumps, the International Olympic Committee president told Reuters on Saturday.

The Trump administration, and successive American administrations before it, has insisted that North Korea must give up its nuclear weapons program if it wants to be treated as part of the global community.
