Saeed, who is the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, heads the charity JuD. Thus, this new anti-terror ordinance seems to be an effort to "clear its name" and present a clean slate before the Financial Action Task Force meeting.

Pakistan banned two charities linked to the founder of an Islamist militant group on Wednesday, just days before a global watchdog is due to vote on a USA -backed motion to put Islamabad on a watchlist for failing to curb terrorist financing.

It is understandable that the government does not want to raise controversy locally by targeting Hafiz Saeed; however it is dire time to apply the laws in practical ground.

In January, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan issued a notification to all companies, prohibiting them from donating money to the entities and individuals listed under the United Nations sanctions committee's consolidated list.

The intergovernmental body had at its plenary in Buenos Aires held in November past year had asked Pakistan to furnish a compliance report on actions taken against the Lashkar-e-Taiba and JuD at the Paris meeting.

The action came after a high-level United Nations sanctions team visited Rawalpindi in January to review progress against groups and individuals banned by the UN. Pakistan has informed the committee of the decision it has chose to undertake. Will Pakistan go as far as actually arresting Saeed and trying him for his crimes, including the attack on Mumbai?

Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf told Reuters the law changes approved by the country's president were meant to reflect obligations under the UN Security Council charter. A separate JuD statement said it would fight a legal battle to against the action, which it said Pakistan was taking to please America and India.

The federal government on Wednesday issued a notification to take over the assets of the Jamaat-ud-Dawa and the Falah-i-Insaaniyat Foundation (FIF). From now on, Hafiz Saeed is a terrorist and JuD is a terror organisation on Pakistani soil.
