Kim Yo-jong, the younger sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and a high level delegation, wrapped up a rare three-day trip to South Korea on Sunday, which Seoul describes a sign of improving bilateral relations despite skepticism expressed by the U.S.

Moon is scheduled to host a luncheon at the Blue House presidential palace in Seoul Saturday for the delegation.

The officials, who spoke on condition because they were not authorized to discuss the US approach publicly, also denied that Pence had been blindsided by the seating arrangement - with the North Koreans in the row behind him, allowing Kim Yo Jong to be easily pictured in profile next to the vice president.

Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong, was at the opening ceremony with North Korea's nominal head of state, 90-year-old Kim Yong Nam. "The vice president is grateful that President Moon reaffirmed his strong commitment to the global maximum pressure campaign and for his support for continued sanctions", Pence spokeswoman Alyssa Farah said when asked about the developments.

A senior United States administration official told reporters that Pence did not discuss North Korea's invitation to Moon when the two leaders watched short track speed skating together.

US Vice President Mike Pence on Saturday said the United States, South Korea and Japan were in complete agreement on isolating North Korea over its nuclear weapons program, even as the two Koreas deepened their diplomatic detente at the Winter Olympics.

Just a day before the opening ceremony it held a military parade in Pyongyang, putting its intercontinental ballistic missiles - which can reach the USA mainland - on display.

But the prospect could sow division between the dovish leader, who has long argued for engagement with the nuclear-armed North to bring it to the negotiating table, and US President Donald Trump, who a year ago traded personal insults and threats of war with Kim.

Pence says, "Then and only then will the world community consider negotiating and making changes in the sanctions regime that's placed on them today". "Moon should be aware that he has to urge denuclearisation to North Korea by himself, not depending on dialogue between the USA and North Korea".

"Spectators broke into cheers and applause" when the North and South Korean athletes entered the arena together behind a unification flag, it added.

His office said he did not interact with the North Koreans.

"She also delivered a message from Kim Jong-un that he is willing to meet President Moon Jae-in in the near future and that he hopes President Moon visits the North at a convenient time". The previous meetings came after rounds of worldwide talks aimed at eliminating the North's nuclear program, which eventually failed.

He did not shake hands with Kim Yong Nam while making a brief appearance at a leaders' reception ahead of the ceremony - although Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe did so.

This item corrects that Kim Yo Jong is the leader's sister.

Hundreds of Twitter users in recent days have referred to "Pyongyang2018", and while some were making a dig at the presence of North Korea at the Games, in many cases it appears to have been a simple mix-up. The U.S. and the North should quickly resume dialogue, he said.

At the opening ceremonies Friday, Pence sat stone-faced in his seat as Moon and North Korean officials stood together with much of the stadium to applaud their joint team of athletes.

Since the Korean War ended in a truce in 1953, the two sides have grown culturally and linguistically apart, deepening the political gulf that had initially separated the poor, one-party state in the north from the rich, democratic south.

"The grievances that the world has about North Korea are very legitimate". It also fired three intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) past year, some of which has the range to reach the US mainland.
