"This has been a horrific murder spree", Sheriff Dwayne Price said in a news release posted on the department's Facebook page. Price also spoke about the murders in a Facebook post addressing the community.
A 911 call about the auto led deputies to an apartment complex, where they found two women dead inside one of the units. Then, in a search for suspect Jospeh Nickell, two additional victims were found dead at an apartment complex, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office said.
A witness told the officers that the shooter, identified by the sheriff's office as Joseph Nickell, left in a black Toyota Camry.
"This has been a horrific murder spree", Price said. Deputies say Nickell had committed suicide.
"The lives of four innocent victims were taken", Price said. "I have worked in law enforcement for 34 years", Price said. "This is one of the most disturbing acts of violence I have ever seen".
Authorities then received a tip about the location of the suspect's vehicle, which led them to an apartment in the area.
The incident is under investigation.
