Democrats are demanding protection for undocumented immigrants brought to the USA as children, known as "dreamers", as part of a spending bill to keep the federal government open after current funding ends 19 January. "We need the wall for security; we need the wall for safety; we need the wall for stopping the drugs from pouring in", Trump said.

"We are now working to build support for that deal in Congress", the senators said.

Details of the plan were not immediately available and the proposal promptly met some resistance. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and Cory Gardner (R-CO) - put out a statement lauding the deal shortly after White House officials made it clear they weren't on board.

"Welcome back to the studio", Trump said to the pool reporters at the start of a cabinet meeting Wednesday in the White House.

Adding to the confusion: The initial White House transcript of his talks with members of Congress had originally omitted his answer to a proposal from Sen.

At that meeting, Trump questioned why the United States would want to have immigrants from Haiti and African nations, referring to some as "shithole countries", according to two sources familiar with the comments.

Alsup said DACA must be resurrected while the legal challenge to it proceeds.Earlier, Trump had taken command of the White House meeting to coax Republican and Democratic lawmakers toward a compromise on the fate of Dreamers.

A memo co-authored by former Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri, obtained by The Daily Caller, admits the Democratic Party needs to protect illegal immigrants brought here by DACA in order to ensure those additional votes. But conservatives have been pressing him to stand behind their efforts to curtail new immigration.

"I'm not talking amnesty at all", Trump was quoted on Thursday by the Wall Street Journal.

DACA shields almost 800,000 young immigrants from deportation by allowing them to work and study legally in the United States.

But large majorities of Americans, including Democrats and Republicans, want Dreamers to stay.

"What about a clean DACA bill now, with a commitment that we go into a comprehensive immigration reform procedure?" proposed Feinstein.

Trump questioned why the USA would accept more immigrants from Haiti and "shithole countries" in Africa rather than places like Norway, as he rejected a bipartisan immigration deal. But unlike their children, the parents would never be placed on a pathway to citizenship.

The New York Times reports that migrant shelters - which help provide assist to people who have just illegally crossed - are filling up as the number of crossings again rose to 2014 levels under former President Barack Obama. The Congressional Black Caucus is expected to oppose any end to the diversity visa, however, because it would end most immigration from Africa.

Immigration reform is now among the top legislative issues in Washington. That would allow beneficiaries of the law to receive three-year renewable legal status.

Alsup also noted the possibility that Trump's termination of the program was "contrived to give the administration a bargaining chip to demand funding for a border wall", as the plaintiffs had argued in their lawsuit.
