AUSTIN - Texas sophomore shooting guard Andrew Jones has been diagnosed with leukemia, the school announced Wednesday.

The UT sophomore guard is from Irving, Texas, and was recruited from MacArthur High School.

Jones' family confirmed Wednesday that the Longhorns' top scorer was diagnosed with the disease after several recent medical tests, ESPN reported.

"This is obviously a hard situation for our family, and we hope everyone will respect our privacy at this time", the Jones' family statement said.

Jones missed four games earlier in the season with a wrist injury but was plagued by fatigue and other symptoms after returning to the court.

Other cast members are Martha Higareda, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Will Yun Lee and Dichen Lachman. Altered Carbon , based on the novel of the same name, even made an appearance at CES this year.

"We know Andrew's a fighter with a strong family and our thoughts, prayers and support are fully behind them", Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte said in a statement.

Head coach Shaka Smart said that Jones had been lacking energy and planned to keep him out indefinably due to illness.

Jones returned to the court December 29 and played nine minutes at home in the loss to Kansas. He played only nine minutes against Kansas and 11 against Iowa State. He averaged 11.4 points as a freshman at Texas, but he chose to return for his sophomore season after attending the scouting combine.

Jones did not travel with the team to Baylor for Saturday's game, at which point it became clear something more sinister than the flu was involved.

His sister, Alexis, was a standout at Baylor and plays for the WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx.

According to Jones' family, he has begun treatment. Jones was ejected from the vehicle but escaped with only some bruising.
