Shortage has Red Cross seeking blood donors

The American Red Cross says you save up to three lives with just one donation.

More than 150 blood drives across the country were canceled because of severe weather and spreading sickness, causing a shortfall of more than 5,000 blood donations. Plus, they said in a Monday press release, the holidays, flu season, and cold weather resulted in "28,000 fewer donations than what was needed in November and December".

Red Cross mobile units were parked in front of Coast 102 in Gulfport today for the radio station's annual blood drive.

Type AB: The plasma type that can be transfused to nearly everyone and can be donated through a platelet or plasma donation, where available, or during a regular blood donation.

The blood donated helps those undergoing surgeries, in accidents, and cancer patients.

The Red Cross encourages individuals to make a donation appointment and to complete a RapidPass online health history questionnaire to help speed up the donation process.

There can be up to about a dozen (or more!) places for Coloradans to donate blood on any given day.

In 2016, there were 67,692 Bonfils blood donors, which added up to 142,214 blood donations made in Colorado that year.

Due to the high demand of platelets, Grant said the Red Cross is accepting them seven days a week.
