Today's National Weather Service forecast: Patchy fog before 10 a.m. and a 90 percent chance of rain. In addition, driving conditions after the rain stops are expected to be hard, as temperatures are expected to drop once again come late Saturday/earlySunday, resulting in flooded streets becoming encrusted with heavy patches of ice.
The Winter Weather Advisory affects portions of southeast MI and will be in effect until 7 p.m.
Rain is expected to change to freezing rain, then to sleet and then snow Friday into Friday evening as low pressure develops, according to the weather service.
Central and northeast IL will be under a winter weather advisory from 6 p.m. until midnight, with freezing rain, snow and sleet expected, the weather service said. Wind chill values as low as -5. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. Ice accumulation may reach a quarter-inch in the region and up to a half inch in some areas (see graphic).
By 6 or 7 p.m. Thursday, the rain will have switched over to freezing rain and sleet.
"Elevated winds will help to dry out some roadways but wind sheltered locations and normally prone elevated surfaces could experience black ice making for hazardous travel conditions late Friday evening through Saturday morning".
Increasing clouds, winds from the north and a high near 21 degrees are also in the forecast.
