When Mathews stepped down as captain from all formats of the game in July previous year, he had said that he wanted to give the new captain enough time to rebuild the side for the 2019 World Cup.

Tharanga was then striped of the captaincy after a string of defeats and replaced by Thisara Perera, who oversaw the team's 2-1 loss in India last month, on a temporary basis. If I turn my back in the hour of need I'll not have done right by cricket, " cricinfo quoted him saying.

All-rounder Angelo Mathews has been reappointed as the captain of Sri Lanka's limited-overs side, less than six months after stepping down from the post.

The selectors, after the suggestion from new head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, have taken the decision unanimously to bring back Mathews as the leader of the Sri Lankan cricket team in ODIs and T20Is. It is very easy to work with him as he has his goals. Also Hathu aiya, and the selectors spoke to me and asked me to consider taking up the captaincy again. Dinesh Chandimal will continue to lead the Test side. When you have a coach like him that other countries are desperate to have, it's a great thing.

"We need stability running into the World Cup", said Mathews, who will begin the new phase of his captaincy in a tri-series in Bangladesh that also involves Zimbabwe later this month.

"My thought was that he's the best person to lead the ODI team because he warrants a place on his own performance", Hathurusingha said.

The squad: Angelo Mathews (capt), Upul Tharanga, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Janith Perera, Thisara Perera, Asela Gunaratne, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Suranga Lakmal, Nuwan Pradeep, Dushmantha Chameera, Shehan Madushanka, Akila Dananjaya, Lakshan Sandakan, Wanidu Hasaranga. "But going into the World Cup we need that stability".
