Natural gas pipeline explodes in northern IL, 2 die

Two people are dead and two others hospitalized Tuesday after farming equipment struck a natural gas line that exploded in northern IL, officials said. "Pipeline officials say a second large 24" gas pipeline near the area was not damaged, and there was no loss of service.

Two farmers are dead and two injured, one critically, after they ruptured a natural gas pipeline while laying field tile northeast of Dixon around 9 this morning.

The Lee County Sheriff's Department has released the names of the men involved in the natural gas pipeline explosion which left two men dead. A tractor pulling a tiling plow got stuck, another tractor tried to free it and a large explosion occurred upon the accidental striking of a natural gas pipeline, Simonton told reporters.

The office also says one of the injured people is in critical condition and the other is in stable condition. Mark and Gloria Nusbaum have been partners in M&R since 1996.

Route 38 from Robbins to Nachusa Road was closed until about 3:30 p.m.

A gas company there making sure the gas line is now safe.

The state Fire Marshall's Office, State Police and the Sheriff's Department are investigating. The State Fire Marshal is handling the investigation.
